Small Commercial Vessel (SCV) Coding is a legal requirement for any owner with a vessel of 24 metres (80') or less wishing to operate commercially. A commercial vessel can be defined as a vessel wishing to carry more than 12 passengers, or operating for any financial gain to the owner. This includes individual passengers, a Charter Company, a Corporate Events Company, a workboat or Sea School. The Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) is responsible for upholding the SCV code on behalf of the British Government and is applicable to British flagged vessels only.

Benefits of owning a Coded Vessel
You may not realise, but by commercially coding your vessel, you are entitled to a great number of benefits. Some of these benefits include, but are not limited to the followin:
 |
- VAT is reclaimable on the purchase of your vessel. Currently that equates to a 15.5% rebate on your purchase price.
- With the recent law change on recreational boats having to pay duty on fuel, it is worth noting that coded vessels are entitled to reclaim this duty. This is a significant reduction to the running cost of motor vessels in particular.
- All purchases for your vessel can be offset against tax. These purchases include any equipment, marina fees, repairs, maintenance and even the cost of obtaining the SCV.
- The major benefit is of course to legally have the ability to make your vessel become a souce of income
- Having your vessel pass the SCV inspection can be a reassuring process. It can also be an informative and educational experience. You will be assured that your vessel and equipment will perform and protect.
